Almudena Ortiz: Overcoming Faceless Labor

Overcoming Faceless Labor aims to put faces on the people whose hands produce the food we eat. It is the result of photographer Almudena Ortiz's long desire to document Latino migrant workers in the United States. She came to this project from a personal connection with this population, since she herself also immigrated from Mexico. However, her own experience was very different from their stories of hardship, labor, and adventure.

The project goals are:

  • To empower Mexican migrant workers, by documenting the richness of their culture;
  • To raise awareness in the American mainstream about Mexican farmworkers' social, cultural, and economic contributions to this society;
  • To improve the living, working, and health conditions of farmworkers;
  • To highlight issues of migrant identity and isolation by giving this community the chance to see itself in a different light from mainstream media portrayals.
