As part of the activities sponsored by the Health Initiative of the Americas (HIA), the University of California (UC) coordinates a medical student exchange program between the various UC Schools of Medicine and Nursing, the Mexican Secretariat of Health, and the Mexican Social Security Institute.
UC's office of Health Affairs and the Health Initiative of the Americas share a commitment to increasing access to culturally relevant health care for people in underserved populations. This exchange is an opportunity to foster medical students' interest in the health care needs of immigrants from Mexico and to train future physicians and nurses to be able to provide care to Spanish-speaking patients in a culturally competent manner. Conversely, the program is an opportunity for Mexican students and researchers to enhance their medical education through their UC experience.
This year, the Ninth BHW will take place October 3-15, 2009 in 40 states in the U.S. and 3 provinces in Canada, with the participation of the consular networks of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Additionally, during BHW five national campaigns will be implemented to promote awareness among the underserved Latino community on H1N1 Influenza, Prevention of Addictions, Nutrition, Prevention of Strokes, and Living Green.
