Research and Policy

Long-term changes in the health of underserved populations will not be possible without systemic and institutional changes. For this reason, HIA has developed a Research and Policy area with five programs: Binational Policy Forum on Migration and Health, Research Program on Migration and Health (PIMSA for its Spanish acronym), Research Network on International Migration and Health (REMIS for its Spanish acronym), California-Mexico Epidemiological Surveillance Pilot Project, and Binational Sister Communities Health Project. These programs aim to enhance the understanding and knowledge of migration and health-related issues facing Latino-origin workers and their families in California and abroad. The key to this is the binational capability of HIA to spread research findings in both academic and governmental settings, and ultimately influence public policy decisions.
