2016 Binational Promotores Conference

XVII Binational Promotores Conference

Every year, the Health Initiatives of the Americas, a program of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health, in partnership with other agencies, organizes the Binational Promotores Conference. The objective of the conference is to relate the work of community health workers, also known as promotores de salud, in the United States with those in Mexico to improve the health of migrants as well as to develop a binational model of promotores.

The Binational Promotores Conference is held once every year. This conference convenes key people from the United States and Zacatecas to discuss the health challenges migrants face and to explore unique and collaborative opportunities to improve the health and well-being of this population. Through this conference, binational work and collaboration is encouraged, developing and expanding networks for future collaborations, including the exchange of educational materials and other resources.

Key American institutions that participate include: Tiburcio Vazquez Health Center, Escuela Popular, La Clinica de la Raza, Petaluma Health Center, Plann Parenthood Northern California, Join Together Nevada, asociación Mayab, The Center for Families, Yolo Family Resource center, LOHP, among others. Institutions representing Zacatecas include: Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), de los Servicios de Salud de Zacatecas (SSZ); and the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (UAZ).

Our last conference took place on May 23, 2016 in Oakland, California. 250 people participated from all over California and 10 community health workers from Mexico also attended. See below for presentations from this year’s conference:
